About the designer

Oldřich Plíva

Oldřich Plíva is a Czech artist. His work has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Bavarian State Prize Goldene Medaille as part of the Meister der Moderne (2017) and the Grand Prize at PAD Paris Arts + Design (2016). His pieces are represented in major international collections, including the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art in Sapporo, and the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe.

Since 1971, he has pursued an independent artistic practice working in glass, porcelain, bronze, and granite, and from 2013 to 2021 he served as head of the Glass and Design department at the Technical University of Liberec.

He studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague from 1965 to 1971 in the studio of Professor Stanislav Libenský, and previously at the Secondary School of Glassmaking in Železný Brod (1960–1964), specializing in caneworked glass.
